Occasionally on launch Aperture will hang. Instead of loading the library; it will just sit there until it finally is labeled unresponsive by the OS. I can then force it to quit and re-launch, and it runs normally every time on the second launch. Other than this issue Aperture runs great.
The odd thing is that it doesn’t happen consistently or even every time I open the program. Each time it does this; it generates a hang report. I have searched online and found one discussion thread about this, but no answers. Does anyone here have any ideas?
OS: 10.8.5

I have already completely deleted Aperture and re-installed it. I also completely rebuilt my Library from the original images.

Have you run a Repair on your Library? You may want to take your Mac into an Apple store and let them run diagnostics on it. You could be on the verge of a disk problem. Better to know before it dies than after.

Thanks for the reply!
I have run the repair function on the library. I have also run TechTool Pro on the main drive, which said that the disk was fine. (Granted that won’t catch everything.)
I do a lot of video, and other hard drive intensive things–I would’ve thought that any drive issues would really show on those type of activities, but they don’t.
The other odd thing is: for the last six times I have launched Aperture I have delayed preview generation (holding shift) and I have yet to have any hangs. Could the preview generation be causing issues?

I’ve seen delays exiting, but not starting Aperture. Maybe it is doing some sort of maintenance or validation. How long have you let it run? Maybe let it go once and see if it eventually does complete. It could be doing some sort of database maintenance action that it isn’t telling you about?

I’ve been seeing this recently too. When I double click on the library it never happens though. That makes me think it has something to do with the library location preference in Aperture……

That’s interesting; I have not tried simply double-clicking on the library.
What I have found is that if I delay preview generation on start it never hangs. I will try the double click on the Aperture Library method.
I am inclined to think that this is a bug, since on 10.9 with the latest version of Aperture, and the same library I don’t have any issues..

The last four times I have launched Aperture I have simply double clicked on the library and this has also avoided the problem. Must be some form of bug in the way the Library and Previews work together.

This happens to me all the time now too. I’m still in 3.4.5 and running Mtn Lion. For me it happens every time I plug in my iPhone. Aperture begins to open as it always has, but it hangs instead and I have to force quit eventually. Then it opens fine the second time. I don’t have preview generation checked in Prefs, so it’s not that. It’s very annoying.
