According to 9to5Mac, books and slideshows won’t be part of Photos for Mac (and iOS)

I’m not so sure the intention is to abandon books and slideshows completely. One of the images in the linked article states: “Layouts and text added to Books, Journals and Slideshows will not be available.”
I know it is only my interpretation, but I think it references that Layouts and the text added to layouts will not be carried over … I don’t think it positively precludes the existence of such options in the future.
I’m basing this on the fact that Apple generates a nice amount of revenue from book printing …. I don’t think they want to abandon that revenue permanently …
I agree with Butch on this one. It just sounds like they’re not going through a lot of time to import specific aspects of legacy-format (iPhoto/Aperture) books & slideshows.
I suspect that photos will definitely have a slideshow ability, and probably books at release.
#nofilter before anyone knew what it meant.
Terrible title unsupported by the facts presented. As others have mentioned - it doesn’t say these features are gone, only that the user data will not be transferred. It could be these features will exist in a seperate “app” or available as part of the Mac OS.
I still say the Mac version of Photos is more than a ported version of the iOS 8 app. If that’s all there was to it - they could release it just about any time as the iOS app seems pretty well resolved.
Overall - there is some pretty sketchy writing here. For example “Photos for Mac seems to focus on editing features, rather than professional tools.” Huh?
Far too early to know what is going on. I thought it was generally accepted that Photos.app at release would be feature light, but would be developed to pick up missing features (like Pages and the other iWork apps). Also, if I remember correctly, if I changed the book template inside Aperture I lost a lot of work (text inside text boxes etc) and that’s within the same app.

The article is about iOS 8 but also claims it’s “safe to assume” the same for Mac. Something based on assumption about a rumored functionality is more likely wrong than right. I assume.

That’s the problem with “reporting” in this new millennium … too much speculation, not enough facts.
As someone who has worked in journalism since 1975, I absolutely hate when anyone shares something in a matter of fact manner that either avoids sharing supporting referenced data as proof … or intentionally misinterprets the facts to advance their view.
Sure, if they are right in the end, they can claim they “guessed” correctly … when it comes to reporting … even something as sublime and inconsequential as this matter … I much prefer hard-nosed fact finding over an educated speculation … our society suffers too much from innuendo, rumors and half-truths from so-called “journalists” … I think it’s time we, as consumers and citizens, should demand truthfulness even in these minor aspects of our daily lives.
I have no idea if books will be in Photos or not. But I would of thought that Pages might be a better place for that.

Along with Pages Apple also has iBook Author - a very robust book design tool. With all that excellent code laying around, I hope they recognize that there is still a place for physical books in the 21st century…
That’s a good point David.
However, one of the weaknesses of the Media Browser, which makes it so wonderfully easy to use Aperture/iPhoto/iTunes content in other Apple apps, is that it only uses the Preview image. So if you have Previews set to low quality, that’s what you get. To use a high-res image, you have to export/import to Pages/Keynote/etc.
Now if Apple wanted to be nice, they could just have a checkbox in the Media Browser, saying ‘Full Resolution’ or something.
The 9to5 article is pure supposition, so doesn’t mean much. One of the reasons people prefer Aperture to Lr, is Slideshows and Books … so why leave them out?
It seems clear to me that the whole point of the new Photos app on iOS and Mac, is to maintain data integrity across platforms, so that any device can access work via the Cloud and perform edits without compromising the originals for other devices. In other words, import to Photos on the Mac, edit a little, open on iPad, edit some more, maybe do some tweaks, go back to the Mac to add adjustments or use features not available on iOS etc. and all the while the file is available *and up to date* to all devices via the cloud and features unavailable on iOS are available on Mac. This is fab. We can already see how this may work, by opening our Libraries in Aperture and iPhoto. Adjustments and features from Aperture, that are not catered for in iPhoto are not lost when opening in iPhoto and then again in Aperture. This is what I believe is the whole point of the re-write and it’s great. The big question is, on day one, what features may be missing, even if they’re scheduled for inclusion later on?
