Should I go Aperture or wait for Photos #1

I just got back from a European vacation and had just perviously purchased Aperture, and consequently signed up at ApertureExpert.com… I took over 3000 photos on vacation but am now wondering if I should go through the effort of importing them into Aperture using your Aperture guidelines or should I wait for Photos?

Not sure I’d want to wait on processing 3000 photos from a vacation!  I’d say go ahead into Aperture and then migrate into Photos when it becomes available.

Don’t wait. You won’t see Photos for at least 4 months or longer. That’s a long time to wait to work on your vacation images.

You’re right about 4 months being a long time to wait… As long as the transition is smooth and painless (which I’m hoping it will be) from aperture to photos then I suspect importing sooner than later would be the path to take

Would you think that the transition will be easy for the keywords as well. Even when they are grouped?

We have no information from Apple regarding exactly what will migrate and what will not. It isn’t even clear whether Photos for OS X will give us all of the metadata editing features we have in Aperture.

I’ve got real concerns about the switch to Photos.  I’ve used Aperture from Version 1 and I run two photo archives for two separate motor sport clubs.  In total these weigh in at around 35,000 images - all of which are key worded in order for me to find certain cars/drivers for submitting shots for event programmes.  If Keywords aren’t included in Photos I mat well have to stay on (unsupported) Aperture.  There are probably around 1200 Keywords and I really don’t want to re-create them all over again.

… and who told you that keywords are not supported. Is that a rumor?

Pure rumor.  There is no way that Photos will not support keywording.

Nobody’s said that Keywords won’t be supported but similarly, no one’s confirmed that they will be. I’ll be a lot happier once we’re told exactly what Photos consists of.

Here I fully agree with you. I would prefer to have clear facts as well of course

Clear facts would be great, for sure.  Its not the Apple way unfortunately.  I know this being a previous insider.

Think I have spotted Photos for OS X in the video for the new iMac with 5k display. As the guy in the video moves closer to the screen there is a photos app with controls like Photos on the right side… its at about 33 secs..

Nope. It’s Lightroom. You can even see the LR icon in the dock.
It’s very telling that Apple has used Adobe Lightroom in their feature video for their new pro photographers desktop. It shows you that they don’t have confidence in Photos app to be adopted by pros.

It does look like Lightroom.

The PS and LR icons are in the dock:

This is bad news. If Apple is using this in their iMac intro, they’ve probably given up their Pro market to the tools they know professionals will use. That doesn’t bode well for Photos.app

I’ve been playing with the Photos.app in iOS to get a feel for it and how my needs as a professional could be met. I’m mostly satisfied when it comes to adjustments but organization is going to be critical and it doesn’t seem that the app will have projects or multiple libraries. I certainly don’t want my thousands of work photos to mingle with my personal family photos.

I’m holding out but I’m starting to lose hope that Apple will cater to professionals with the Photos.app, specially if they’re featuring LR on their new Pro Photographer machine.

If Apple are moving away from their pro market it wouldn’t be a huge shock with their recent track record.  The Mac Pro was the hardware they built their name on with every designer worth their salt using one but then Apple abandoned them for years in favour of endless updating of the iMac.

I’ve already started looking at Lightroom as an alternative in case I do have to jump ship but I’ll wait to see what Photos looks like first.  Even its title doesn’t inspire me to think it’s going to be a piece of software to attract pro photographers.

Thanks for the link john James… Just checked it out as it appeared to answer a question I must have posed as you were posting the link… (Kinda twilight zoney, eh?)… Anyway it appears so far the patch to go from aperture to Lightroom is only garnering 1.5 stars as far as working as advertising… Subsequent comments claim that aperture has been updated to work seamlessly with Yosemite and appears to still be the choice, for the next little while, for most of the users there.
I guess it comes down to… If there are sufficient tools and support for a program within the operating system and program you presently use is there a great need to either upgrade to the newest, fastest version or will the present one suffice.
Personally I buy new cars and drive them into the ground… I don’t have to have the new models each year… Perhaps then I should be concentrating on mastering the tools that are already within the program I own (aperture) before jumping ship and starting over with another. I’ve run accounting software that was outdated, but that fit the bill perfectly without updating to newer software that boasted it could do “x” so much better…. And didn’t. Older is not always necessarily bad… And I suppose I can always count on progs like Perfect Photo Suite to keep me up to date on current filters that may be desirable…mand at far less cost that the adobe suite.

Lots of good discussion, tons of speculation (what else is there at this point?) and certainly lots to ponder. I’m not sure I’m any further ahead than where I was at the start… Or maybe I am!

the fact that Lightroom is in the dock along with Photos is a little disconcerting…especially for someone who has not yet fully committed to aperture (although as I said I purchased it upon my return from Europe a month ago with full intention of using it as my photo prog of choice… That and the excellent tut’s here at aperture, oops photosexpert.com)

I guess it begs the question… do I go about the travais of continuing to learn aperture and setting up aperture with my projects etc now in hopes that one day (not necessarily soon it appears) Photos will also have a seamless transition to projects and albums… Or do I dump that pure Apple route and switch now to Lightroom… Or… Is there a seamless transition to Lightroom from my folders/projects/albums that will allow me to continue with aperture now and … If… Photos lays the big egg I could then just as easily switch to Lightroom or CS5 which I already have as well.

dunno!

These are for your family photos right? I would say that Photos.app will at the very least be the best for personal photo management and editing. Where professionals are concerned is that many of the tools that help us manage different projects and clients won’t be available in the new app.

So if this is for your family vacation photos, by all means continue using Aperture which will no doubt provide the best transition to Photos.app.

I don’t think there is anything to worry about here. They are trying to shift computers. Most Mac users stay Mac users. If you are a PC using photgrapher you are Lightroom focused and you will be happy to see Lightroom on the Mac. Don’t forget that photos is itself going to be free so having Mac users choosing to use Lightroom costs Apple nothing.

Until Apple comes clean with what I loose in Photo’s compared to Aperture I have purchased my last new Mac and made my last OS update.

Best Regards,

Rick

Rick, I can understand the sentiment.  I’m an ex-Apple insider.  I worked on the architectural model for the GPU in the iPhone 6 (now I’m at Oracle).  It is indeed awful how Apple is handling this.  They also really don’t understand why their behavior is this bad.  I can also tell you they would never, ever, put up with this from a supplier of theirs.
