Where did the Roll Go? #1

I did see where the Roll album was going away but I figured something would take its place.  Imagine my surprise when most of the 130+ photos in the roll disappeared from the Albums.  They are in Photos and sorted by Collections which is not very useful for me.  Can a default Album be created to put these in or do I have to manually create an album and remember to move Recently Added ones to it?

Thanks!

You should already have a default “Recently Added” album. Some people are saying that is the new name for the camera roll.

There is no obvious Photo Stream album. Yet I know it still works since new photos show up in Aperture.

I haven’t enabled iCloud Drive yet since I saw a recommendation not to do it until Yosemite is released.

I have the Recently Added album which currently only contains 4 photos.  The rest of the 130+ photos which were in the Camera Roll are now scattered in “Moments” and “Collections”.  It did not touch an Albums Panoramas, Videos and one I sync with an Aperture Smart Album.

Moments looks like it puts photos taken close together in bunches.  Collections tries to put photos together logically by Locations if the photo has the info embedded. Otherwise it lumps them by dates and/or date ranges.

Not sure what the sliders under Photos & Camera in Settings does.

Last thing I saw was Recently Added is those taken in the last 30 days. Haven’t seen definitive facts on how this works anywhere. Time for ThePhotosExpert to step in.

PhotosKit is a very new API and there are certain aspects that somewhat hang between the old and the new  asset APIs.

One part of this is extended metadata - there is no way within the PhotosKit api to directly fetch extended metadata (EXIC, IPTC…). The current way to do this is to fetch the image and then read the metadata from the fetched data. So in short: This can be done, but doesn't yet use the full possibilities a cloud photo library could implement.

Another one is the paradigm shift of Photo management. The “Camera Roll” was a very device centric way to handle your images. With a device independent cloud photo library such a thing may not make much sense anymore - at least that could be what the developers thought when removing it for the “iCloud Photo Library”-Mode. If you switch that off, then “Camera Roll” should appear again instead of “Recently Added”. This topic is difficult because there already are alot of Apps and use cases which used the old API and the old paradigms and there is a need to check if the new API makes progress possible for any purpose.

We have to understand that this whole thing is actually really a “Beta” (and not a “Google Marketing Beta”) - so behaviour may change if user feedback makes that necessary.
