Aperture 3.6 Released for Mac OS X Yosemite Compatibility

Now that Mac OS X Yosemite has arrived, so has the promised compatibility update for Aperture. It's weighing in at a hefty full dot-version number of 3.6, and is ready for download from the App Store.

I've only just upgraded to Yosemite (overnight) and am waiting for iCloud Drive to finish setting up before updating Aperture myself, so if anyone has any experience already to share, throw 'em in the comments down below!

It seems to run just fine on my System. I noticed that the Detailslider on the Raw Fine-Tuning Brick is now set to 0.13 instead of 0.0 on my NEF-Files (Nikon D7100) and setting them manually to 1.0 has way more effect (sharpness / noise) then under Mavericks and 3.5.1

Run Yosemite und Mavericks Side-By-Side.

Hmm, I just posted this in the support forum but Aperture 3.6 is showing up as an incompatible app!  What to do?

Florian,

Did you first upgrade to Yosemite?

Thanks Carl, but I did not download Yosemitet.  I got the answer to this after I posted in the support forum.  Thanks for the response though.  I’m giving Yosemite a week or two out in the wild first and looking to see if any problems especially with Aperture arise or Apple releases an upgrade before downloading.  SOP for me with anything just released.

All good for me. Yosemite & Aperture 3.6 on a 27” iMac (mid-2011) & 13” MacBook (late 2008). iCloud photo sharing in Aperture works fine having replaced Photostream.

What do you mean by “iCloud photo sharing replaced photo stream”… AFAIK nothing changed here?

So Joseph…have you installed Aperture yet on the shiny new OSX? I’m very, very interested in hear your results…before I jump. Thanks!

I have, and so far so good. Haven’t done anything huge but I did import, edit and export some photos no problem. AppleScripts worked fine as well.

@PhotoJoseph

That’s very promising. Thanks for the checking. That means I’ve got a year to ponder an ugly Adobe move and wish and hope for a useful Mac solution. Even today I can’t believe Apple would produce such high end equipment like the Mac Pro and dump pro photography software. I know their business model is 99% consumer oriented but they must have something up their sleeves. I’ll get 1-1/2 years with Aperture now before I’m forced to switch to a newer (safer and more efficient) OSX. :(

I have noticed a lot more spinning beach ball with 3.6 even on a 2013 Macbook Pro with 16 Gig of RAM. Also no UI change, Stop light icons remain the same as previous versions of OS X.

Troy — sounds no bueno. Why don't you start with some library maintenance and perhaps create a new library for a few projects and see if the problem is persistent. The “stop light” buttons do NOT change in Aperture, so that's expected.

@PhotoJoseph

Thank Joseph, I did it on a blank Library and an older one, on the SSD and on a USB3 external and same beach ball… No game stopper just slowing things down a bit more than the last version. See how it goes in the next few weeks.

Posted this in main forum -

Just upgraded to OSX Yosemite and 3.6 Aperture.  Came to import photos from SD card and it only showed a fraction of the images on the SD card.  Closed Aperture and ejected the card and tried again.  Different images but still only a few of the 200 or so on the card.

Copied all images to desktop folder and was able to import fine.  So no issue with SD card itself but appears to be an SD card import issue.

Anyone had this?

Robin

I hate to ask the obvious but I have to :-) Are you sure that you had no import restrictions in the import window; i.e. import only JPEG, or only movies? I know that doesn't necessarily make sense for what you're describing but it's worth asking. Also, had you given it sufficient time to load such that the import button was illuminated?

Can you test with a different card reader?

If none of that helps, try creating a new library and importing into that; see if it shows everything.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Don’t worry about asking, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

I have a 27” iMac and use the sd card reader and do not have another one to check with.  Finder shows all the images.  I have tried the sd card in my work laptop and that shows all the images so I’m happy that the sd card is not at fault.  When I close aperture and reload the sd card A3.6 shows different images but always only a fraction.

I have checked that I do not have ignore duplicates ticked and I am only importing jpg (sorry but I don’t shoot raw! I know, I know).

Just tried a different sd card with over 150 images according to finder but this is what appears in A3.6.  Note the Loading Assets bottom left hand corner and the differing number of images being reported.  Also (forgot to add) that the import button remains greyed out

Robin, not sure what I should see in the screenshot as that's just an existing project loading. However if you're not seeing the import button come to light, usually that means that the card is not done loading. However it sounds like you're giving it enough time to finish.

This is a bit of a lark, but try trashing the Aperture preferences. It fixed an odd issue for another user so I'd like you to try it.

Here's instructions and something else you might be interested in.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Tried trashing the prefs but no different.  I see that someone else has the same symptoms as me.   That points more to an A3.6 issue than a user/mac related specific issue.

Its not causing me any real problems so I’ll sit back and wait for a 3.6.1 update ….

Thanks for your help Joseph

Hi guys…is there a link different from App Store where to download 3.6 update? I have a very slow connection and downloading on both macs it’s a pain.

I’ve yet upgraded to Yosemite and took me 2 days :-( Il will make a bootable key to install it on the other mac.

You can copy 3.6 from one machine to the next. I did it from my iMac to my MBP Retina without issue. In fact I did it with all my iLife and iWorks Apps as well without issue. After copying them I just restarted and all where update and showed up in App Store as downloaded.

Hope that helps even if it is a tad late.

I have the same issue as Robin.  Only a fraction of my pictures are being displayed and that is after I select import.  The “wheel” at the bottom keeps spinning and spinning like it is still looking, but after hours of waiting…no more pictures show up.  I checked the SD card under Finder and I see all my images.  I have rebooted and to no avail.  I would appreciate any help!!!  These problems occurred after I updated to Yosemite and Aperture 3.6

Amy

Amy and Robin,

Both of you are having the same issue (card not completely loading; not seeing all photos in Aperture import window). Please go through and answer the following questions and run the following tests, reporting results, so I can report this to Apple. I know I already have some of these answers but if you can put them all into one message that'd be helpful.

  1. What camera are you using?
  2. Are you shooting RAW, JPEG, or RAW+JPEG?
  3. What SD card reader are you using? If you have multiple readers, please try another.
  4. Reformatted your SD card (in camera) and test again.
  5. Trash Aperture preferences?
  6. Create a new library and test on that.
  7. Create a new user account, and then a new library, and test on that.

Thanks!

Hi Joseph

6 & 7 - Same result, stopped showing just three images out of 100+.  Loading Assets just spinning round

Regards

Robin

OK thanks Robin. I think the next stage may be reinstalling OS X but let me try to get some info before you proceed.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Thanks Joseph

Not sure I want to go to the trouble and risk of re-installing OS X when Aperture is eol.  My workaround of copying files elsewhere to import seems to work and doesn’t cause me any issues.

However I’m happy to try any other things you think might fix this.

Kind regards

Robin

Fair enough Robin. Reinstalling is super easy, but I'll keep you posted on what I hear.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Hi Joseph

Just connected my iPhone to my iMac (don’t usually do this as it’s a work phone on a different apple ID) to download a photo.  All photos were shown and import images was black i.e. not greyed out.  No spinning Loading Assets prompt.

Is this like trying a different sd card reader?

Not sure how this helps but thought I’d post it.

Robin, just to double-triple check, you don't have “do not import duplicates” enabled, right? That's not what's causing the missing photos, is it?

Assuming not, please open iPhoto and also Image Capture and see if you see the entire card there.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Hi Joseph

Here is a screen shot of the ImageCapture screen overlayed onto Aperture.  You can see the spinning Loading Assets (bottom left hand corner) from A3.6 and it only thinks there are 79 photos but then you can see the 185 shown in ImageCapture screen

Oh and the do not import dupes is ticked but greyed out as you can’t tick/untick it until the import button is no longer grey

Regards

Robin

Robin—ok can you plug in another device like an iPhone and disable “do not import duplicates”, then try again? If you don't have anything else to plug in, trash the preferences (which I thought you already did) as that should reset the import settings to their default, and try again?

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Very interesting.  Connected iPhone and unticked check box. Now with the do not import dupes unticked I re-inserted the sd card and I see 5 images out of 185 but  then also 180 dotted outlines where the images should appear.  The Loading assets is still spinning.  The activity window shows Loading thumbnails 5 of 185 and it’s just stuck.  When I trashed the perfs I must not have noticed the distinction in the behaviour.

Essentially the same result just slightly different symptoms.

Hope this helps

Regards

Robin

Robin, can you upload a screenshot of your complete Aperture window while trying to import? I don't expect to find anything but I'd like to see it.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Here you go Joseph.  This is where the dotted outlines of the images show but only the first few are filled in.  There are over 800 images on this card.  If I switch to import from the mac drive then all images are shown and the Loading Assets stops spinning.

Regards

Robin

(btw Robin, please upload screenshots in their original PNG format, or covert to JPEG. These PDFs don't render well here. Thanks).

So in this screenshot, the Import Checked button is available.

Why don't you import everything, make sure you'r backed up, then reformat your card and try with some new pictures?

I know you said you use the card as a backup, but that really isn't best practice anyway. Cards should be reformatted often and are only meant to be temporary storage.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Hi Joseph

I’m at work but I will try and repost the images as jpgs when I get home.

In the mean-time here are some more observations.

Same sd card in both cases

When ”do not import dupes” IS ticked then you do NOT get dotted outlines and the import checked button is greyed out

When ”do not import dupes” is NOT ticked then you DO get dotted outlines and the import checked button is NOT greyed out

(Apologies for all the double negatives)

Either way you can only see the thumbnails of a small percentage of images and the Loading Assets message still has spinning symbol going round and round.

Re using the SD cards as a backup - they are my 4/5th line of defence.  All images stored on iMac in Aperture as managed, backed up to Time Machine, Vaults backed up every month or so to external portable drive, all images backed up to external drives just as jpgs, all images (masters & versions) stored in Zenfolio account, external drives kept in fire safe in house, second copy on external drive kept at parents house, oh, and finally a copy on the SD card!  That should just about do it.

Regards

Robin

OK, so I think it's time to reformat an SD card and see if the problem goes away. Or get a new SD card. But we've eliminated everything we can in Aperture, so it's time to start looking at the card. If they haven't been reformatted in a while (and it seems that they haven't) then that's the most likely culprit at this point.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Hi Joseph

I will use a spare newly formatted sd card tonight and post the results.

Regards

Robin

Hi Joseph

Formated (low level was ticked) an SD card and then took 50 photos.  Inserted SD card and got the same symptoms as noted before.  Now that joanneooi is also getting the same symptoms it does seem to point to an Apple related issue rather than a specific user aspect.

Hope this helps.  As ever I’m happy to try most things if you need me to.

Regards

Robin

Just a thought - I have only jpg files on the SD card and use only EOS M bodies - I wonder what joanneooi uses?  I suspect most users here use raw or raw+jpg and I suspect that EOS M users are also in a minority here.

Regards

Robin

Hi again Robin,

I seem to be striking some luck too.  I’ve reformatted the cards again.  Switched to taking RAW files only, I use SONY NEX-6, and have uploaded all images without issue.  I gave it another try using RAW+jpeg and then just jpeg only and have had no issue with that either.  However I have not taken many test images probably only 20 or so each time.  I would usually have 100 or more to upload at any one time and now wonder if sheer size had anything to do with the initial problem.

The only odd thing I found now is that I must remove my SD card from the camera and place into Sandisk reader to upload.  I was always able to upload directly from the camera before, that is, not having to remove the SD card each time, but that is a different issue.

Thank you to you and Joseph for your info here.  I seem to be working ok for now.

Hi joanneooi

I too suspect that the issue is also volume related.  I could almost sense the previews in the import window slowing down and I agree that if I took only a handful of images the import might allow it to work.

I’ve always used the in-built sd card reader in my iMac - I don’t have another reader to try though I could try connecting my EOS M via the usb cable and see what that does.

Glad you are working again.

Regards

Robin

Hi again joanneooi

Just taken the sd card and confirmed that it wouldn’t load in the iMac’s sd card slot.  Then returned it to the camera and connected the camera to the usb slot - all images came up in the import window and I’m able to import them.

Regards

Robin

SOLVED!!!!  Formatted the SD card again and set one of my EOS M bodies to RAW only.  Shot 40 or so photos and inserted SD carding mac.  Found all images no problem.  Then took a few more images on RAW+jpg and inserted the card again - and it stuck after only 2/3 of the images, hadn’t even got to the RAW+jpg pairs.

Would be interested in confirming this from another user

Regards

Robin

Great sleuthing! We’re finally getting somewhere. Next try with the same card, as is, toggling the different raw+JPEG handling options (raw only, jpegs only, etc.).

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

By the “same card” I have assumed you mean a jpg only card.  Any option of how to handle raw/jpg pairs gives the same result as before except “RAW files only” which doesn’t cause Loading Assets to spin as there are no raw files on card and so finishes correctly although (obviously) there are no photos to select.

Regards

Robin

Same card meaning the one that had both RAW only and RAW+JPEG pairs.

@PhotoJoseph
— Have you signed up for the mailing list?

Re-shot RAW and RAW+jpg pairs on newly formatted sd card.  Same results as jpg only card as posted above.  No combination worked.  Each time Loading Assets ended up spinning.

Reformatted card and took only RAW files - loaded into A3.6 and it showed all photos allowing me to import selected.

jpgs seems to be the issue with on their own or as RAW pairs

Looks like I’m going to have to move to RAW files ;-)

Regards

Robin

OK, thanks. I'll pass all this along. Very good info for sure!

You’re welcome, just ask if you need me to try anything else.
