I know that when I place my photos in an album they are just copies. When I transfer those albums on my iPad via iTunes, what file type do they become if the original was raw? When I open them on my iPad to edit, it makes me make a copy first. Just curious.

You are right. Copies from Aperture that you have synchronized with iTunes can not be altered on an iOS device unless you allow to make a copy.
