Hi,
Just wondering what people would do as a solution to my camera putting incorrect rotation metadata in a RAW image shot vertically up or down.
Doing a rotation in Aperture isn’t an option, as that then means I can’t export the file as a RAW image - which I’m wanting to do so I can work with RAW images in some pano stitching software.
Is there a solution that can firstly show the original, and then alter it so Aperture will only see the altered RAW as the master file?

You could try an EXIF editor like ExifTool.
HUGE DISCLAIMER: I have never tried ExifTool nor do I know if you can edit the image orientation field with it.
GINORMOUS DISCLAIMER: Never use it on your only original. Always use a copy. You never know what writing to the file will do to it.

Aperture does have that option if you are using a referenced library (File->Show in Finder). For a managed library, that command is not available since Apple doesn’t want you mucking inside the library package.

I might have to think about moving to a referenced library, can Aperture handle the importing when its referenced, or would I have to switch to Image Capture for that?

Can do on import. It’s one of the settings in the import window - the “Store Files:” popup menu. It allows you to put them inside the Aperture library package, leave in place if you’ve already copied them to your computer’s HD, or move them to a folder structure you’ve identified.

If you want to get a copy of the RAW file from a managed database use the Export menu, choose “Original”. You can then modify exif data and re import it. DISCLAIMER: append the name when you re import the file so you can tell it from the original and so that it doesn’t overwrite the original. i.e. XXX.CR2 > XXXa.CR2
