My trash container looks empty, but there are a number of images in the count. Also, the files inside the trash each say “0” but if I click on them, I can see images.

I presume this is just after you clicked on “Empty Trash” ? If so, did you try a second time?
Whenever I have something a little wonky going on with Aperture, which is very seldom, I just close it and restart it and usually it corrects itself.
I'd much rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
