Speed Comparison Capture One 8 vs. Aperture #1

For those of you, who like benchmarks, this might be interesting.

I was asked by Phase One support to do a screen recording when panning around  and doing brush strokes at 100% view.

I did the exact same thing within Aperture and uploaded the video to YouTube. Machine specs are in the video.

You may understand, why I still stick with Aperture for sorting, rating and comparing images and lite editing for now. It is simply far more efficient.

Yeah, I think anybody can confirm this, independent of the machine.

This was one of the “Con’s” I noted during my evaluation phase for C1.

But as soon as you look at the results, it simply makes no sense to stick to Aperture as I could get a ton more details and much better colors out of C1 with just basic knowledge of its toolset.

Hi Mike,

I've seen this as well on some pictures. On other's I cannot get better results than I get in Aperture no matter how hard I try. So it depends on the picture.

There is no doubt, that Capture One has the more powerful editing tools. But not every picture needs them all.

For fine art prints, I won't stick solely with Aperture these days, but for those I'd probably roundtrip to OnOne or NIK plugins in addition to using Capture One anyways.

For the 50 shots from the last birthday party, that are only viewed on iPhones, iPads and Laptops, I still enjoy the snappier workflow in Aperture. Thus for now Aperture is still my central hub for storing  my pictures, doing lite editing and for the  rest I roundtrip to whatever app seams useful. Capture One is one of those.

Got feedback from Phase One Support:

They confirmed, that Capture One doesn't use OpenCL for panning and brushing. This explains the huge difference (probably 10 times or more) in speed for me.

They stress, that Capture One is using a much more complex processing algorithm and uses the full processing engine when zoomed in to give accurate display.

I don't buy this as an explanation for the slower performance of Capture One. Don't know about Capture Ones processing algorithm, but the pictures in my test had no adjustments seen, they were pure RAWs out of camera.

Brushing without any effect set is just overlaying a red tone over the picture. A pretty simple “processing” task.

And I never had the impression, that Aperture is not running it's full processing engine when zoomed in. There is no delayed update of the picture after you stop panning.

It is just a shame, they don't use OpenCL for these tasks. Aperture and iPhoto had it for years, Photos has it, OnOne's Photosuite improved in this area with their latest version 9.5, in Lightroom 6 it is advertised to come. I don't think Phase One can ignore this trend unless they want Capture One to become the slowest dog in the crowd.
