You can use the “File>Export > Original” command in Aperture and select “Create IPTC4XMP Sidecar File”. This will produce a .xmp file with the same name as your original. This will contain all of the metadata including the location info. Keep the .xmp sidecar file with the original when you read the original into C1P and it will pick up the location as well as other metadata you had in Aperture.

The only problem then is that by bypassing the Aperture Importer in COP I don’t bring over my adjustements and versions which COP does seem to render well.
So I think the workflow needs to be:
- import (referenced) Aperture library to COP
- export all masters+XMP from Aperture to a temporary set of folders
- overwrite my Masters folder system with the temporary folders which contain the same masters but with their accompanying XMPs
- turn on XMP sync in COP and let it grind away
I’ll give it a go once I’m sure I’m well backed up!

A couple of things you may want to consider:
- after you have pulled in the Aperture library to Capture One, I think you can drop the XMP files into the folder where the images are stored and then use the “Synchronize” command in COP. I believe it will pull in the updated data from the XMP file.
- you should take a look at the tool called Aperture Exporter. It automates a lot of the functions you are planning.
Hope this helps. I have been going through much the same process over the last month or so. I still don’t have it all sorted yet but the critical stuff is there. And I still find that the RAW processing in COP is better than other tools. I expect Phase One will continue to work their catalog tools. They just added catalogs in version 7 so it is still early days, I think. (I hope…)

In essence that’s it. You do have to set the XMP preference on (to load in my case) before Synchronise will work, but when you do it grooves.
I’d noticed Aperture Exporter early on and had forgotten about it so thanks for the reminder. I did do a quick look at some old photos and decided that in the main my skills have improved and I could re-render them far better now should the need arise. However I think Aperture Exporter will also preserve my hierarchical keywords so worth it for that alone.

Aperture Exporter exports its own new keywords hierarchically, but not my existing ones. I’ve sent Adrian a note to see if I’m missing anything. If that fails, Photo Mechanic.

Houdahgeo will read your Aperture library and write the location to the master.

The other way I’ve found is to export my Masters with XMP and read those in. The slight downside of that is you need plenty of disk space as you need to have two sets of masters on the disk during conversion, but I’ve got a terabyte spare. Houdahgeo sounds like the way to go if you haven’t.
