I have just started checking out Photos for OS X. The absence of star ratings in Photos is definitely a pain. However, I find that rating photos via keywords is not as bad as I had originally expected. If 1 Star, 2 Star, 3 Star, 4 Star and 5 Star keywords are created, with the shortcut keys 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively, it is quick to add or change ratings when the Keyword Manager is open. Pressing a number key adds the rating. To change a rating, press the number key corresponding to the existing rating to remove it, then press the number key for the revised rating.
Keyword is great and actually better than star ratings. With the keywords panel open, I have my quick tags to use and it’s so far really fast! :D

My biggest problem with Photos and the lack of star ratings is actually the loss of the quick filter by star rating ability that both Aperture and Lr have. If we could get some kind of quick filter back, that would make this a much more usable system for me.
Would a Smart Album meet your needs?

Smart Albums! They’re REALLY tasty! Smart Albums have me looking at Photos OSX again. I can manage everything with keywords now that I know all the cool kids are doing it that way. If I can edit the photos in Capture One Pro, then I’ll be happy…and productive :-/

I read recently that apple is planning to add “iPhoto” edits to Photos in OS 10.12. iPhotos has star rating, but i am not sure star ratings will be included in the Photos OS 10.12 upgrade

Am I the only one who names the keywords *, **, ***, ****, ***** instead of 1 star, 2 star, etc.?
@Peter
Ha, ha…:-)
No you’re not alone. I use this trick too and it works great.

A big issue I have with the rating/keyword approach is if you change your mind you have to remove the old rating. In Aperture I could quickly go through and type a number. If I changed my mind and typed a different number it would change the rating. In Photos you add both/all the ratings. So if its a 4, then you type 3, then decide its really a 5..well it has all three applied.
yeah found that to be a pain aswell when using keyword ratings.. I always have to check the keywork manager panel and see if any other star ratings keywords are applied… hope next OSX major update will bring back iPhoto ratings as they are reported to be doing.. color labels, flags and stars.
As for Smart Albums, is there a way to change the key photo of it?.. I can do it for normal album but not for the smart album.

Not a complete solution, but far more “advanced” then the normal keyword rating if you use this trick:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8531
This way you can also use a keyword and a rating, making use of a smart album and the constrain is “meet all criteria”
