Anyone on Retroactive'd Aperture seeing new problems? #1

Hey everyone. Long time reader, first time… just kidding. It's me, your host! It's been a while since I've been in my own forums.

Is anyone here who's using Aperture on Big Sur or Catalina via Retroactive seeing issues like thumbnails being rendered as black, or blue, or upside down, or not at all?

Please respond below if you do or do not see this, and what version of macOS you're running.

Thanks!

First thank you so much for info on Retroactive software to use Aperture. I purposely did not upgrade my Mac-Mini from OS 14.6 Mojave to 11.2 Big Sur because I did not want to loose Aperture. However I bit the bullet last month, got Big Sur and was going to start using Lightroom. In desperation, I googled to see if there was anyway I could still use Aperture. I got your info and utilized it today. There is an Easter bunny. Will let you know if I see any problems with thumbnails.

I’ve been running Aperture for my 50-year archive on frozen Macs at 10.9.5, with iCloud Photos disconnected. Decided to try to get modern with the M1’s, after researching and test-driving nice Lyn, clunky ACDSee, and others. (Divorced Adobe, early adopter of remarkable Affinity suite, alas with no DAM).

Accidentally found Retroactive yesterday. Instant certification of Aperture, which then loaded cleanly and instantly on M1 full-core iMac. Things seem to be fine so far. I will give it a torture test today on a single small library, and then on a copy of the big one weighing 167GB (referenced). Documented issues are clearly listed, so not disappointing with no PhotoStream and no export of slideshows. But I can still use slideshows for review and sequence appreciation for shows and books.

I’ll post another report when I have a list of three things that seem confusing or problematic with the adaptation. Meanwhile big thanks and “You Rock!” to developer Tyshawn Cormier…

can you update this == I’m in the same boat, it’s now 1/1/22 and I so far have not used it or anything else but do need to get serious = I have a new MBP running Monterey and would like to be able to use Aperture still = but have heard that there are issues…so wondered about your real world experience.  Or I may need to try to find a new DAM app & editing app.

I really can not recommend trying to run Aperture to anyone anymore. It’s been what, seven years since it was cancelled? It’s really, really time to move one. I recommend using Avalanche to convert the library https://cyme.io/avalanche-photo-conversion/

I agree and know == which is why I am still on Mojave on my machines == I’ll look at cyme and thanks for the info == the issue this is less conversion than figuring out an app that is a good DAM which will work with Luminar [which I have] or other such.

I have tried to run Aperture on Monterey with no success (so far). I have run on Catalina and it seems to work ok. Running on Big Sur produces some additional quirkiness, and crashes more often, but still somewhat usable.

Beginning to try ON1, but still finding myself going back to Aperture.

I can't stress this enough Mike… it's time to move on. No matter what hoops you jump through to keep Aperture running, it just can't last forever and eventually you'll hit an unrecoverable problem, and then what? Please, please do move on. This Retroactive was a stop-gap but not meant to be used long term. I still recommend using Avalanche to move to another app. But please, stop trying to use Aperture. It's been a decade… it's way past time to switch.

I just installed Aperture on Big Sur. Other than the known issues like not playing videos etc., thus far I’ve only encountered one rather small but puzzling issue. Seems that my Aperture does not see  folders (containing images) on my desktop, however it does when I place the folder into User>Pictures Folder. Not a dealbreaker but can’t understand why.

I’ve stuck with Aperture and have used it since it was released. I’m a semi-retired photographer and perhaps stubbornly, I’ve not found a suitable replacement. I’ve tried most of the photo editors/DAM and simply do not like any of them enough to switch. I do use Photoshop CS6, Affinity Photos, Corel Painter 2020 and a few other editing apps, for select editing, however I run them from a dedicated 2017 iMac running High Sierra. I installed Big Sur on an external SSD wherein I installed Aperture to give it a thorogh workout. Although I do not plan to totally commit to Big Sur, I was curious what it was all about. Sure a few cutesy things but you know, I don’t really need or care about most of the tweaks in newer OS X versions. That said my real reason for Big Sur is to enable Apple ProRAW  and eventually ProRes video. I think ProRes may run (in Photos)  in  Catalina but decided to try Big Sur.

I do not plan to import my existing Aperture Libraries into Big Sur but I will use it for a couple cameras I use which Raw files are supported. I will as I have thru the years backup all images to external HHD. I’ll follow up with any other quirks or issues with Aperture after I exhaust as many things as possible.

I have upgraded to Catalina. And then used Retroatcive.  I can then use my old Aperture 3.6  well.

But now I am accounting a problem:  Starting a new project in Aperture, then inserting foros, I find that some fotos show alright in the Browser minture. However, for some others, there shows the fotos, but converting immeditely to a colored minature (in the Viewer this shows as black).  What do I have to do to cure this?

Under a second Macbook Pro Retina still run with Mojave, however, the same fotos are inserted quite well.  Thanky for your reply, or reference.

I was resisting moving off Aperture - nothing comes close to its melding of DAM and editing = but finally decided to do so = I am using both Avalanche and Photos to convert my Aplibraries - Allowing me to do two conversions at a time.  This is on a Mojave iMac in my basement = for now I’m converting things to Photos only but as I start working on more recent Aplibraries may start moving to LRC - in any event it’s going well [so far] and support has been VERY responsive to my Q.  I am REALLY going to miss Aperture, but can’t do anything about that = at least the pics can now be worked on in Photos - or LRC if I choose
