Hi there,
I’ve upgraded to Aperture 3 and everything seems to be working. I’m not seeing many of the problems others have had (knock on wood).
The question I had was how many libraries do you suggest having? Right now I have one but it has about 60 000 photos and I’m wondering if I should start splitting things out.
What do you guys do?
Michael, David,
10,000 images is a really light library. I have a library that contains around 100,000 images, which had become unusable in Aperture 2 but in Aperture 3 seems to be behaving quite well. My current “active” libraries are in the 20,000 image range and Aperture is handling them without skipping a beat.
I break mine out for other reasons than size… I have one client I do a lot of work for and they have a dedicated library, then another that’s for pretty much everything else.
And to be honest, once I get some more time in my older 100k+ library, I’d like to merge it with my other “active” library and go back to a single library model (except the client one of course).
It helps to have a fast machine, naturally. I recently upgraded to an i7 iMac and it’s amazing the difference from my MacBook Pro!

Thanks to both of you for your comments. I’ll stick with one for now, I think. I’m planning on upgrading my iMac this fall to whatever is out there, so that will probably improve things.
Michael:
I made the split when I got to around 10,000 photos. I made it coincide with the end of a year as well. For me personally it seemed as if it streamlined things a bit.
