Access to Aperture Library from Capture One Pro #1

If I transfer my managed Aperture Library to a Capture One Catalog and leave the original images “in place” in the Aperture Library, will I be able to access those images in the Library from either Capture One or Aperture?

Yes, you can access your files from both tools in parallel. Of course, any edits you make with one tool are not reflected in the others library/catalog.

Thanks, Mike. This makes me feel better about moving to Capture One

With one exception: If you use an external editor from Aperture, the resulting edits will be available from Capture One too of course. You need to synchronize the folder though, so that Capture One imports the new photos.

OK, Jochen. This makes Capture One even more attractive.

Jochen/ Everyone…. I’m running Aperture and C1 in parallel during the trial. Can you tell me how to sync the edits within C1? Does it require a complete reimport or is there a sync-refresh of the referenced library within C1? Also, what are your thoughts on just leaving the managed Aperture library alone and referencing it indefinitely? Then moving forward (2015—> ), creating a new managed (or referenced) library in C1? Is this a flawed idea?

Here is what I think you would need to do: Once you have imported your Aperture Library into C1, start a new Aperture Library if you want to keep processing new work with Aperture. When you are ready, you can pull this new Library into C1 with the Aperture edits.

If you just use Aperture to install your RAW files onto your disk, the files can be added to C1 by either using the Synchronize… command on folder that C1 is already looking at, or you can add the new files using the normal import tools in C1.

I think C1 only gets the Aperture edit information when it does a Library import, and I believe it can only import the entire Library.

I have made the move to C1 and am working hard to make it work and figure workarounds for the areas that are weak in C1 that I used in Aperture. So far, I am pretty happy, once I get the RAW files keyworded and location tagged with other tools.

Best,
Tim

Which tools do you use for keywording and geotagging before importing them into C1?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I’m giving C1 a try and like what it does but find the learning curve quite steep. There are some pretty good video tutorials but no written documentation that I can find. Also, like some others, I find the C1 Catalog takes  a VERY long time time to load. The Capture Integration website <captureintegration.com> that specializes in Phase One products and Capture One says this:

“We have been testing a beta (developer’s) version of OS X 10.10 Yosemite with Capture One Pro 8 internally, but do not yet have confirmation of official compatibility. Based on that information, we strongly encourage you to wait before upgrading until there is a new release of Capture One Pro and we have tested compatibility.

I hope a new release of C1 Pro comes soon and makes it more friendly for all former Aperture  users who want to convert.

The captureintegration.com site is not updated regularly.

C1 8 works fine on 10.10 Yosemite.

However, there is a current bug with the importer tool and the tokens there with 10.10.3, which was released yesterday. Would wait on that one.

I made a quick screencast of how my library structure carried across from Aperture to C1.  I think it’s going to work well.  There are some differences I’ll need to work out.  Also, I have used some of the suggestions in these forums and made the editing tabs in C1 similar to Aperture.  You can see my file structure here:  https://youtu.be/Avd70qPkLaY

I think you will find that you can see all the photos in a Capture One album (icon looks like two stacked cards) and you can see all the photos in all the albums that are in a Capture One Project (icon looks like a file box) but you can’t see any images when you select a Capture One Group (icon looks like a folder) even if the folder contains Albums or Projects with images. This may explain what you described in your screencast.

Best,
Tim
