During the last couple days, the rendering of thumbnails in Aperture’s thumbnail view has been very slow. In the two or so months I’ve used Aperture 2 and Aperture 3, the thumbnail rendering has been blazingly fast. I’m working with roughly the same amount of files now that I had then. The only differences I can think of are that I’ve been brushing in more effects recently, mostly the sharpening tool, and I’ve been importing JPEG files from a different camera (Nikon D700 instead of Canon Rebel T1i). -Note that the 15MP (Canon) and 12MP (Nikon) JPEGS are about the same size- My library has barely over 1000 images, almost all JPEG. Why all of a sudden are my thumbnails rendering at 25% the speed as before?

I am having a similar issue with Aperture running slow, starting yesterday I can get a couple minutes of activity out of Aperture and then I have to Force Quit because its not responding. It seems strange that it is doing this when all I am trying to do is open my adjustments tab or export to flickr. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be doing this? Its not an issue of HD space because I have 300g free.

Look for posts by Kevin Doyle - he has some pretty specific suggestions for maintaining your library (some of which might be overkill, especially in your situation), but which are good to know about nonetheless.

Michael, did you try copying your library to another drive then back again, just to see if it’s in fact a fragmentation issue? Even with a small library, if your hard drive is relatively full, I could see this becoming a problem pretty quickly.
Makes an argument for larger drives with lots of space and regular degragging for sure!
