Browser scrolling when dragging keywords? #1

I've just updated to 3.2.1 and came across this annoying issue. When I try to drag keywords from the keyword HUD to photos while the browser is in grid mode, the browser starts scrolling rapidly and I can't get it to stop no matter which way I move the mouse. Quite frustrating. I don't recall this happening prior to the update so I'm thinking it's a new bug. Anyone else experiencing the issue?

I haven’t been aware of this before and I have just upgraded to 3.2.1 so I checked it out. It seems to me that the automatic scrolling is an aid to get to your chosen photo. Put the cursor below the centre of the screen and it scrolls down rapidly and stops only when it gets to the end or you put your cursor on the vertical centre of the screen. For me it doesn’t look like a bug, rather a blunt navigation “aid”. Speed control would be helpful though if you have a reasonable number of images in play.

Thanks for the reply, Howard. If I could make it stop scrolling, I would agree that it’s not a bug. In your testing, were you able to find a way to control the scrolling?

Hi Ken,

I would say that dragging a keyword to a specific image in the browser is nigh on impossible. The speed sensitivity is to high. I could slow it down with great care but hitting on the image I wanted is impossible. Why don’t you try dragging the keyword in the split view. I found the auto scrolling in that mode to be much more controllable. Of course you could preselect your images and then drag the keyword across.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

All,

Curious, I never add keywords this way so just tried it out. For me, I’m seeing it scroll very slowly (almost too slowly to be useful) and only as I get the mouse to the very bottom or top of the screen. I tried it with the thumbnails at various sizes, and also with my Aperture window at various sizes (I’m on a 27” iMac, so that’s the biggest window size I tried).

So, I’m seeing quite the opposite of everyone else here. Can you give some more details please, such as screen resolution, what Mac you’re using, and maybe even include a link to a screenshot so we can look for any other quirks?

If we can get some details in here, I’ll send this post over to Apple, but let’s get more info together first since I can’t reproduce it myself.

Hi Joseph, Ken,

I am using a MacBook Pro(6,2), Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549), 4Mb RAM and Aperture 3.2.1. I have just checked it again and it appears that scrolling speed is a function of the image size in the browser window, smaller = slower and larger = faster.

I would send screenshots of the Aperture windows but I don’t know how to get the link. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I’m using a 27” Apple Cinema display attached to a MacBookPro(6,1) running 10.6.8. My aperture window is zoomed to take up the full screen. Based on Howard’s observation about image size and scroll speed, I tried a few experiments. If I have the browser magnification set so that 3 pictures fit in a row, I get the uncontrollable scrolling. However, if the magnification is set to 4 pictures or smaller, I get controllable, predictable scrolling. Very bizarre. Howard, can you reproduce as I’ve described?

Hi Ken,

I have just reproduced the conditions you described. Over to joseph for comment.
