Say I have 1,000 photos and I have them in my Aperture library. I like to use Aperture and am getting to know Photoshop Elements' layers, so want to use that, too. I know that PE 11 can be my external editor, so my Aperture photos can be made available to PE 11. However, is it possible to avoid the round-tripping by making it so the PE 11 Organizer shows the same 1,000 photos when I open PE 11? Example of what I'd like to do (I think): Today, I open photo of cactus in Aperture, alter it, and I now have a new version in the Aperture Library. Tomorrow I open PE 11 Organizer, see the altered cactus photo, edit it some more, and save it back in the Organizer. The next day I'm back in Aperture and want to do some more editing to the cactus and find the latest version from PE 11 in the Aperture Library.
I suspect the answer to this question is, “Just pick an application and stick with it,” but it seems the kind of setup I'd like as described above would be a good one.

That’s possible to some extent. But you’d be better off round tripping from Aperture to Photoshop Elements.
You could keep your files as referenced files “in” Aperture. You’d have a folder somewhere with your photos in it and those photos added to the aperture Library as referenced. Then you could have Photoshop Elements show you the contents of that folder.
But its going to be hell to keep the edits synchronized and you’ll lose Aperture’s ability to non-distructuvely edit RAW files since Aperture keeps its edits as an “edit list” in the Library and doesn’t apply those edits destructively until you export that image.
