I am in the early days of using C1 and although things are very different the experience so far is very positive. Obviously my workflow needs to be adjusted and some things seem strange at the moment. Certainly worth the move and looking forward to the next few days/weeks of learning.
My question concerns all my NIK tools. At the moment I can see no obvious way to utilise them. Any ideas?
Barry,
I have also been fooling around with Capture One Pro. Now with the latest update (8.1.1) you are able to do a roundtrip to Photoshop. Just right click on the image and select Edit With and choose Photoshop. So if you have Photoshop you could edit in that program and then save it back to Capture One. Also you could try right clicking on the image and use “Edit With” and then select Nik. Personally I have not yet tried that but the roundtrip using Photoshop works well. You can also click on File and then click on Edit With or Open With. Using Open With does not do a roundtrip.

Barry,
I've tried Color Efex Pro 4 using the Edit With command in Capture One (C1) and the roundtrip works flawlessly. Not yet tried the other Nik apps though.
Whilst I agree you can probably achieve much the same results in C1, it is much easier if you are used to using Color Efex Pro.

I’ve moved to Capture One. I’ve found the discussion at this site (below) very helpful:

Good overview and compassion to Aperture tools. Also, you can do a round trip with Nik in Capture One as explained by Stuart. This macrumors discussion thread has a comparison of Aperture, Capture One and Nik on the same photo and the author is of the opinion that Capture One is equal to Nik and saves doing a round trip.
Terry,
Your last few words seem very significant “Capture One is equal to Nik and saves doing a round trip”. As I was writing/posting my question I did wonder if I was in fact getting everything from C1.
Thanks for the link though.

I suppose it depends which Nik tool you are using and how.
Just to confirm to everyone - NIK works very well with C1. Just right click on image and select your edit tool. Once completed just “save” out and the image will appear alongside the variant in C1.

Agreed. I have used all the Nik apps with C1, by choosing “edit with”…. Works great! I have tried to reproduce Nik Silver Efx adjustments within C1 and it’s a lot of work but can be done. I suppose you can create some presets and save them so you don’t need to round-trip…. But round-trip takes just a second. Althought I’d prefer not to have a massive Tiff file. Something else to consider if you like ready-made edits, check out http://captureonestyles.com - some of these are quite clever.

I too have moved to C1 and have used the Nik trick. But I cannot get HDR Effex Pro 2 to work. It appears to only export one image (not the 3 that I selected) to Nik, though, when returning to C1 there are three (unmodified) .tiff files there with the originals. In my experience, sometimes the finished image was reimported into C1 (though only one image was worked on, I think) and other times C1 crashed and sometimes HDR Pro crashed. In any case, and I have tried repeatedly, I cannot get it to work satisfactorily.
Dfine doesn’t work either as of COP8.3; on the other hand COP’s noise reduction is so much better that I wouldn’t be bothering often anyway.
Likewise HDR Efex Pro requires an export of TIFFs as 8-bit and re-import, but it does work.
However I used it mostly for recovering highlights and shadows which COP seems perfectly capable of doing on its own from a single RAW. So for me it’s one small downside that it doesn’t seamlessly round trip; but set against the plusses it’s not an issue.
