corrupt database and vault #1

I have used Aperture for years now and backed up to a vault and time machine repeatedly.  Two weeks ago Aperture would continue to crash and then prompt for the repair database process….ultimately going to the rebuild database prompt which i did. After hours of it not completing the rebuild, i would “force quit” the application….send off report.  Then it wouldn’t open so took to Apple with their Aperture expert and copied the vault to a new external HDGRaid and created a new library from the vault.  After 8hrs to rebuild, all appeared ok with the adjustments carrying over (did lose some projects) but could go back to the masters for them.  I had not reformatted a number of cards so imported those to a new library on my laptop.  Today i went to the library from the vault, some of the thumbnails had some faults in them but most were clean views of the images.  When i click on the image to open, it falls apart and has lines throughout or goes to an black image w an exclamation mark and unsupported notice.  So this library is 700GB (yes my bad) and now i am afraid to touch it and worry that it is all corrupted.  What can i do?  Do i create a new library from the vault?  Or do i go to time machine if in fact the vault is corrupt.  I will lose an enormous amount my images if that is the case.  The genius bar is of little help….Apple’s customer service is terrible when it comes to the applications.  Hoping you all can help me to salvage my work.  thanks kindly. sherb

So after posting my dilemma, i was kind of hoping i would get some feedback, response and help/advice.  Will ask if anyone can please offer advice to kindly leave a note or if you have experienced this to let me know how it was resolved.  I am trying to repair still….but ready to start pulling the masters off and hosting separately which seems to be the prudent way to go.  Apple folks were of little help.  Seems once something like this happens, its my error for hosting the images on the library.  Wont make that mistake twice.  I would rather repair then export out all files as masters….so if anyone has a suggestion or experience, don’t be shy.  Thanks again.  Sherb

Is the library a managed or referenced one?

It’s a managed library (never again do this)…

My thoughts are that Force Quitting during the original rebuild may have corrupted the Db. I would suggest rebuilding it from the TM backup ideally on a different machine to prevent any carryover of problems from yours. Once the library is recreated from backup you could then copy it back….

Thanks Simon…appreciate your time.  Will look into this, but there seems to be other issues as i have gone and looked at the master files in both the vault and new library….those are corrupt too.  In the original aperture library, those masters are ok as far as i have found and will export those to a new EHD and begin from that.  Given Apples lack of ongoing support for the future…. i will not house images in any library but on other EHD and use Aperture, Lightroom and Photoshop for their tool functions only.  I had hoped to save the time of rebuilding this but it seems less likely….the folks at Apple are not at all hopeful nor can they explain the issue.  There is no alternative to the ‘force quit’ option if the program is not responding.

Your masters should be fine.  If you want to make a backup copy of just the original masters (without adjustments) it is pretty easy.  Right-click on the Aperture Library, and select “Show Package Contents”.  In there is a folder with all of your Masters, organized by date and import.  These should be untouched by any corruption in the database (unless it was a Disk problem).  Copy this folder to a safe place and then you can start fresh if it comes to that.

Bob, Actually, the masters in the vault are corrupt.  Apple folks are looking as to why that happened.  I had to go back to the original program to get them out ….same process you described.  Rebuilding the library outside and will not store in the application again.  Thanks…had hoped to find a way to preserve the adjustments and rebuild/repair, but seems all for naught.  Alas.  Appreciate your time Bob.

I have had a similar corruption.  My files were referenced and still corrupted.  No fix that I know of except to start using lightroom instead.
