Hello - I'm one of the record-setting downloaders of Aperture 3 from the first day of the new Mac Store. I've been wanting to migrate to Aperture 3 for quite some time and the price point was irresistible. My question is why do a get a pop-up indicating that it will still take an additional 7 gig of hard drive space to migrate my photos to Aperture 3 – even though I'm using the referenced rather than managed method? (If I migrated all iPhotos to Aperture in a managed environment, it said I needed a little over 40 gig to do that.) Thanks!

Don’t forget a good backup before getting rid of your current setup!

Bill,

Welcome to Aperture and to ApertureExpert.com!

Even though the master files won’t be imported if you go referenced, there’s still a lot of space needed for Previews, Thumbnails, and the Metadata. Read this article to understand what’s happening “behind the scenes”: A Comprehensive Look at Thumbnails, Previews, and More in Aperture 3. That’s why you still need 7GB of space.

You really should have a a minimum of 10% of your hard drive free—or more. Check out this recent response I wrote to a user in a similar situation.

Thanks, Joseph. I appreciate the info. I did replace my original MacBook 250GB hard drive with a WD Black Scorpion 320GB hard drive. I now have only 62GB free, so if I go with a managed file structure in Aperture, I think I’ll need to delete my iPhoto files once their copied to Aperture. Thanks for the 10% free space tip.
