We are new to using Aperture and we have upgraded to using Aperture 3, but it seems to be slow at processing the images. My husband has recently started to shoot in Raw only and as you know those are LARGE files. When we import images we are importing them as Projects. I am wondering if I should begin to break our Library of 10K images into smaller libraries based on subject matter. Also, I bought 2 of your eBooks yesterday and I have not read through both of them yet, but you mention that the Pros use Referenced files vs. Managed files.
1. How do I know the difference?
2. If I am using Managed files how do I change to Referenced?
Thank you for your advice in advance.
Laura
Laura,
Thanks for buying the eBooks. Your questions are both answered in there in depth, but here’s the short versions:
1. If there’s a box with an arrow on the bottom right of the image in either Browser or Viewer view, then it’s referenced (meaning it lives outside of the Aperture library). If there’s not, then it’s Managed (meaning it lives inside the Aperture library). Tap U or Y to toggle that metadata on and off in the Browser and Viewer, respectively.
2. There’s a command in the File menu called “Relocate Masters” that will let you move the master files for any image, selection of images, project or even your entire library.
Good luck!

Joseph,
Thank you for the short version. I haven’t had much time to read through the ebooks. We are working with managed files. Looks like I have more work to do.
