I have a photo of my daughter that I want to print as 5 x 3.5 to fit a frame I purchased. I am printing on 5 x 7 photo paper. The final print is coming out as a 4 x6 and I didn’t want to cut to fit the frame because I love the crop as it is now.
I shoot on a crop sensor camera and have to admit I struggle with understanding aspect ratio too. Not sure if this matters.
Can someone please help me figure out how to do this in Aperture?

No need to worry about crop sensor. Tell Aperture your paper is 5x7 and set the margins to give you a 3.5x5 image - ie an inch on the 7-inch side and ¾ inch on the 5-inch side. Select “more options” to get at margins.
If your image is not already in a 10:7 crop then … it’s complicated - just do the crop first! Crop only determines aspect ration, not print size.
