Good day all, I'm one of the $79 converts to Aperture. Before I was only using Bridge/Photoshop Elements…I shoot RAW and save RAW files by date. When I process RAW files, I'll save the final output in a subfolder with JPEGS that I can then use to email/print etc.
From this point forward, I'll be importing RAW files into Aperture but what do I do with 3 years of RAW (main folder)/JPEGs (subfolder)? Do I just import the JPEGs since they are processed? If I import the RAW files, the Adobe Camera Raw edits probably won't import since PSE uses the xml sidecar file. What would you do?

Jason,
Welcome to Aperture and to ApertureExpert.com!
Since you have two separate files, you will probably want to import them both, but maintain separation between them. I’d import the JPGs so that you have all your previous work already done, but then also import the RAW (as a separate series of projects, or separate folder) so that if you do want to re-edit a photo, you can go back to the original quite easily. Are the JPGs named the same as the RAWs? If so, it’ll be easy to search for the matching RAW file by just searching by name.
I believe that Aperture will read the metadata from the XML sidecar file, but I can’t say for certain. It definitely will NOT read any adjustments. But the metadata (copyright, location, etc) may be. Please do let me know what happens there; it’s not something I’ve come across before.
If you only have a few files (which I doubt), you could take the time to stack your original RAW and edited JPG files so that they are together in Aperture. But that’d be a manual process and probably not one you’re keen to do.
cheers

Thank you Joseph! The RAW and JPEG have the same name so a search for the original RAW will be easy enough as you’ve mentioned. Thanks again and great site btw…I’ll let you know about the xml and how Aperture reads that data. Best of luck this year.
