Panasonic Press Release

Panasonic has announced that the company will release the firmware update program for the LUMIX S1H Full-Frame mirrorless camera to enhance its performance and usability, as proclaimed last September. Working together with Atomos, a global company that creates video equipment for professional film creators, the new firmware enables the output of maximum 5.9K/29.97p and 59.94p 4K* RAW video data over HDMI to save it as Apple ProRes RAW on the Atomos Ninja V 4K HDR monitor-recorder. In addition, it further complies with 3.5K Anamorphic 4:3. Panasonic commits to provide innovative solutions for professional film creation by enabling all S1H users to receive this firmware for free of charge.

The program will be available at LUMIX Global Customer Support website https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/ on 25 May, 2020.

luvin my S1H and my Ninja 5 !
Hey PJ appreciate all your efforts in keeping us informed. Is there a best SSD for the Átomos for use with the S1H for 6k pro res recording. I’m using a WD Blue but I get the Skippy Kangaroo image often.
Yeah, check out the Angelbird AtomX SSD https://geni.us/M4Fi8P — it's designed specifically for the Ninja V — or if you're not using the V, there is a compatibility list on the ATOMOS website, and I definitely recommend buying only what's on that list.
Hi Joseph, great video as usual, question; can you shoot slew motion 60 in raw onto the Ninja? Thanks!
@@photojoseph Thanks for the reply, what about raw and slow motion 60 or 120?
No, RAW and VFR aren't available together.
Please I want to buy a camera looking at a6400 Sony and gh4 lumix which one should I go for, gh4 is 7years now do you still recommend it for shooting cinematic video or a6400 ?
@@photojoseph ok should I go for a6400 or gh4 , I can't afford gh5 for now, and is not yet on London use all we have here is new gh5 , so I don't know if a6400 will give me cinematic video look or gh4
Never used the a6400. GH4 is still a solid camera, but of course GH5 is better if you’d an afford it. Look at used GH5, and if that’s still out of range, then many great content was shot on GH4 cameras. Lighting, art direction, etc. is far more important than the camera.
Hello just left a comment on another vid but seems more fitting here. Any thoughts on how the 4K raw is going to be implemented? I ha ve the z6 right now and I’m thinking of switching and upgrading to the S1h because I’m fairly salty about the pixel binning on the Z6 along with a couple of other things. But if the S1h does the same for 4K raw, I may consider another option. I know it still offers the full 5.9 raw, so that’s still very nice. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Excellent. Scaling takes a lot more processing power, which in turn generates more heat, which means faster processors and bigger heat syncs which means more money and a bigger camera! There’s good reason so many manufacturers manage to make cheaper, smaller cameras that claim to have the same features… but they rarely deliver on quality. Please use my affiliate link to buy the S1H if that works for you — I’d appreciate it! http://geni.us/LumixS1H
PhotoJoseph thanks for the reply. I have done a ton of research and also have not found anything saying it is pixel binned. I thought it wouldn’t have been a big deal, but the moire was fairly bad on the Z6 which really sucks. I don’t know why they chose to do this instead of scaling/cropping in. I am only really finding good responses on the S1h so I think I’m pulling the trigger. Here goes nothing.
To my understanding, 4K on the S1H is scaled, not binned. I’ve never actually looked into this but I hear “pixel binning” in relation to other manufacturers but have never heard that about any LUMIX cameras. I think this is part of why people love 4K on LUMIX, even the micro four thirds cameras. It looks really good.
Great work Joseph! Just a question on the prores raw: I’m using a S1H and love the camera but my MacBook Pro has issues with my codecs. I’m now working in proxy but colorgrading is not as accurate. Would prores raw be easier to work with instead of the 4K 422 10 bit mov’s? An atomos is cheaper than a new laptop... and my wife will be easier to convince to let me buy an atomos.
yes definitely. ProRes is an extremely efficient codec.
So will they have the 8K capable GH8K with phase detect by the 2021 Olympics maybe?
You love answering questions I can’t answer, don’t you Charbax.
Is there a possibility of getting 422 color at 6k (internal) while keeping 10 bit?
no
Is there a way to control the S1H functions (i.e. record, stop, exposure, lens, etc) from an external monitor/recorder like the atomos or blackmagic video assist, etc.
No; the camera can trigger record on the ATOMOS but I haven't seen a recorder that can control the camera. If you need remote control, use the "LUMIX Sync" app
Very informative!) what about cable? This atomos cable its too expensive for me. Alternatives?
That’s like buying a Ferrari but putting regular unleaded gas in it. I can’t help you here.
PhotoJoseph i have s1h, ninja v and fast ssd. But i dont wanna buy so expensive cable.
You need that cable. Sorry, but if you can afford an S1H and a Njnja V and a fast SSD then you can afford the HDMI cable.
Any improvements on the AF front??
I didn’t leave anything out. Are you having troubles with your S1H autofocus?
Any information on the raw sensor data type? Is it 12bit linear raw for 10bit logarithmic raw? I suspect it is 12bit, floating point linear. We know the EVA-1 is 10bit integer logarithmic curved. (Panasonic is clear on that) Sony often does 12bit linear readout on these sensors and if this is an IMX310 variant sensor (every indication points to us that it is) then it would make perfect sense. (EXMOR A/D converters are on-chip so it's sampled right there at the collection point and handed off to the image processor already in 12 bit) I don't think that Panasonic could change this. Anyhoo, it would be interesting to know!
I saw 12-bit listed on the ATOMOS site, so I’m going with that. I don’t know any more specific than that though, sorry.
Hi Joseph! Will the S1H have improvements with the HDMI latency?
No. All cameras have HDMI latency. It's an inherent part of the process of converting the signal to HDMI.
Love it! Looking forward to implementing that firmware update
@@photojoseph any insight on why it's being delayed now?
It's pretty awesome!
thank you for the great information
my pleasure!
When it comes to editing, does it require a decent MacBook pro? As I've seen your RAW workflow on the Atomos channel, It wasn't really challenging for the MacBook. Can you give some details about the specs?
Right, I wasn’t pushing things there. I haven’t edited a full project on my MBP, but it’s also over five years old. It will, however, play it no problem. I haven’t tried multiple streams of RAW simultaneously on it. Any modern MBP will handle it just fine though.
Panasonic said let's hurry up and push out the raw capability before Canon r5 comes out LOL 😆 (BUT NICEEEEEEE THO)
sweet!
@@photojoseph oh I already know bro just making a joke lol, definitely got to get my hands on one and do a review!
not even a little bit. This has been a long time coming. Also remember that yesterday was supposed to be the first day of NAB. Most of the big camera companies plan around NAB.
Is this 10 or 12-bit 4:4:4? Maybe 10-bit at 60fps?
Any word on of this will come to the S1?
No additional dynamic range, no. You get every bit of DR out of the sensor in v-Log. Raw will give you better color fidelity, but depending on what you’re doing you may not notice it.
@@photojoseph Makes sense. Aside from the practical side of raw and being able to adjust things later, do you think there is any image quality difference between Vlog and raw? Does it have more DR or any other benefits vs the vlog? Great video!
Very unlikely, sorry. RAW video is a very high end feature and limited to the pro video camera line.
There is a bug that when you record at 6K external monitor will go blank. I’m hoping the firmware fixes this
That's not a bug, but it's a limitation that has been removed in this update. I talk about it at 0:26
I'm guessing you filmed this video in Pro Res Raw
LOL nope… only got one of those rigs, and it was in the shot ;-)
What's up with the second camera angle and you not switching your viewing perspective?
Personally I appreciate the clean edits (rather than disorientating jumpcuts) and think the two angles keep visual interest subconsciously. I didn't even notice he wasn't looking into the second angle camera.
Curious that you'd say that… most interviews you watch have multiple angles; one right into camera and others off-axis. Shooting this way provides a method of shooting and editing quickly… I can decide to repeat a line nearly anywhere, without having to change focus, and get clean edits because I am changing angles.
JackH Tech49 I thought that too. Just seems weird looking off into another direction.
you mean, why don't I look at it?
