After the previous two posts, if you’re a Photo Mechanic user, you may be considering switching by now. This post is all about how to make that happen—how to match your familiar Photo Mechanic rating system, keyboard shortcuts, and much more in Aperture. How to Import Multiple Cards Simultaneously and Bypass Thumbnail Generation on Import in Aperture 3

Recently I met with Jeff Cable, Olympic photographer and Lexar Marketing Director, to put Aperture head-to-head with Photo Mechanic for his (and every other Olympic photographer’s) extremely time constrained workflow. The end result was nothing short of epic, cutting the import, select, edit and export time by one third. With this new super-fast import method, and Aperture’s built-in editing tools, allowing Photo Mechanic loyalists to bypassing the Camera RAW –> Photoshop –> Photo Mechanic roundtrip delay, there’s no reason any shooter on deadline shouldn’t be switching to Aperture immediately.

Sandboxed Preferences for Aperture

December 14, 2012 - 2:22am

I was looking to trash my Mail.app preferences this morning and I know I’d looked before, and hadn’t found them. The file used to be com.apple.mail.plist and located in ~/Library/Preferences/ however that file no longer exists (and if it does, it’s just a holdover from a previous OS). Finally today I found a discussion online that explained because Mail.app is a “sandboxed” app, that the preferences have moved to a new location. And what else did I find in this new location?

Import & Browse Test: Aperture vs Lightroom vs Photo Mechanic

Thomas Boyd's picture
June 20, 2012 - 10:00am
Thomas and I discussed this post at length, before he even ran the tests. Should we do it, or shouldn’t we? This site is not in the business of proving Aperture is better or worse than anything else; it’s here to teach Aperture users how to get the most from Aperture, and that’s it. However given what a critical piece of the workflow this is for professional photographers (fast imports), and that this is a significant feature improvement in Aperture 3.3 (even if Apple isn’t marketing it as such), we decided to do it. And once you’re comparing Aperture 3.2 to 3.3, you have to compare to Photo Mechanic as well, which has long been regarded as the gold standard for speedy imports and selects. And once you add Photo Mechanic, you can’t ignore the 300 pound gorilla in the room, Lightroom. So, we decided to compare them all. And as you’ll see, we even gave Lightroom a more than fair shake, trying to improve its result based off feedback from former Lightroom users.
