Need an ATEM Mini?

What this tip is about…

If you've ever needed to live stream from your ATEM over a cellular connection, it's easy to set up as a backup, or even to stream from your home or studio. But when you go on location, everything changes! There's some tricky networking configuration you'll need to set up if you want to connect your laptop to your ATEM in the field — when the USB port is being used by your cell phone!!

I'm so sorry this did not work for me :(
By the way, you might want to let your viewers know - apparently Blackmagic in their latest software update changed the YouTube preset in the ATEM Control Software from "YouTube" to "YouTube RTMP" - when I selected "YouTube" I couldn't choose from Streaming Low, Medium or High. It drove me bonkers, until I saw a Blackmagic forum post from a user who said that you have to select the new preset "YouTube RTMP" and then you can see the streaming low, medium or high settings. Literally the only settings I could select before was "Hyperdeck High" "Hyperdeck Low" or "Hyperdeck Medium".
@@photojoseph I actually finally resolved the issue, thank you so much for your video!
Maybe your cellular plan doesn’t support tethering?
Thank you very much for these explanations but it does not work in 5G for me while it works when:
- the smartphone is connected by wifi to my box;
- I broadcast via OBS with the smartphone connected in the same way 5g on my laptop.
I really can't understand where the problem comes from.
@@photojoseph yes that's it. but it doesn't work.
Atem-usbc-phone-wifi...wifi-fiber : ok
Atem-usbc-phone-5g : NO !
Atem-usb-laptop with obs studio-usbc-phone-5g : OK !
I don't understand why!
I’m not sure I follow. You’re trying to use the 5G connection of your phone to stream, right? Enable tethering on the phone and connect it to USB 4 or 5. That’s all it takes.
Thank you very much ✍️👈💯🇲🇽 greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
You are welcome! Did you know that I have a dubbed Spanish language channel as well? https://youtube.com/@photojosephenespanol?sub_confirmation=1
Thanks a million for this straight forward informative video. Though, I am seeing this exactly one day too late. I have struggled to do this for a long time, and only figured it yesterday - after studying. Network theory. Much more expensive route :). However, I have bookmarked this video to share with colleagues. Thank you again for sharing this invaluable video. Long time subscriber here.
That’s awesome to hear and I’m sorry it found you too late! Blame the algorithm! 😅
That is not a private ip range. It risks part of the internet being unavailable. I would have used 192.168.100.x with a subnet of 255.255.255.0.
Quick question: I have an ATEM mini. Not a Pro or anything. Is the network connection used at all? If not, why is it there? Thanks very much!
It’s an optional way to control the ATEM instead of USB. Watch this video: https://youtu.be/ols4voQw2yM?si=Ra8-lEbzrP0JxJnH
@PhotoJoseph Maybe a bit late, but, looking all the comments, I have a question: if you put a router to the equation, and that router has no internet connection, just used for a local network for control the atem, would it work the same way as you describe in your video?
@@photojoseph Thank you!
Yep!
As always, clear, concise, and not over the top with unnecessary information...just straight forward easy to digest solutions...thank you PhotoJoseph
Hi just wondering if I use USBC on Atem mini for recording on harddrive. Then use ETHERNET for connection for Bridge how can I configured my labtop to control the ATEM thru wifi??
I don’t follow. By “bridge”, do you mean the ATEM Streaming Bridge? If so you’ll need to explain what you’re trying to do. Ethernet should connect to your network switch, as should your computer, ideally also over Ethernet. Wifi should be avoided if possible.
Good video. Efficiency and straight to the point
My iPhone 14 is not working, does anyone have the same problem? The indicator turns red but does not stream on YouTube
Can you only use your phone data when the ATEM is connected or be connected to wifi on your phone?
Great tutorial Joseph ....in the spirit of people being lazier with the advent of AI etc should they not have a way of saving these different settings so you can go back and forth with these settings depending on being in the studio or out "on a mountain" and not have to manually go through the setups time and again. I find something like this putting me off the Atem vs a switcher software solution like Switcher Studio.
Macros are your friend!
If we have an ATEM with two usb connector, can we connect two cellular phones one primary and one back up in places where t's not possible to have a hard wire connection?
Huh… I’ve never tried that. Best to ask BMD support. It’s a good question!! Let us know what you learn!
No way to get a connection here with Android 13 using Google Pixel 7 Pro (top of the line Google's phone) I've tried lots and lots of options. Update: Android 14 and new 9.5 Atem firmware still not working.
Great video PJ. Do you know if you can use a USB-C expansion to run both a phone or connection to a laptop (mac) for control and a hard drive at the same time?
@@photojoseph thanks for the quick reply. Great stuff! Grateful for the response.
you can not. The USB port actually changes modes (automatically) depending on what you plug in. It can't be in both modes at once.
I connected my iPad pro to my ATEM mini via HDMI, then on the iPad I went into the camera and opened channel 2 where the device was connected so it would show up on the screen but it would only last for about 1 minute and disconnect. What I can do.
@@photojoseph Ok thank you very much I appreciate your help
You need an app. There are a few; try this one https://pulse.ly/c6jkkeq1st
Thanks for the video. If you were in a location where your phone had a solid wifi connection, but there was no hardwired ethernet available, will the phone share the wifi connection over USB to the ATEM, or will it only tax your cellular data plan?
It also charges the phone, which is great so it doesn't go dead during your stream!
@@danmohan1981 that’s super interesting. Thanks for testing it!
@@photojoseph Ok, was able to test. With android, I put the phone into airplane mode, then turned wifi back on. I then had to turn on USB Tethering, and YES! It works!
Huh… great question and I don’t know! You’ll have to try it.
it's possible that you can record from mobile devices as a camera?
tnx
Can you do this on the ATEM Mini or does have to be the ATEM Mini Pro ISO?
ATEM mini Pro and above have built in encoders
Thanks very much
😊
Great video. Is there a way to keep your USB-C connection to a hard drive to record the project and ISO files while streaming using a cell phone?
@@Morpheus170 You’ve just described the extreme, my friend.
@@photojoseph That sucks. I don't need a big switcher, I just need it to be the same size and features as this one but with two USB-C ports and two HDMI out outputs.
@@Morpheus170 no
@@photojoseph How about a USB-C Hub?
Only if you have the Extreme model with two USB ports.
Thank you for turning my in the wild setup anxiety into excitement! Great tutorial. Subbed
Happy to be of service!
I love the way you covered this man. Always comprehensive and detailed. For people who want to do this regularly and all over the place in random locations, it's worth buying one of those wifi routers that have a sim card slot. Then get a sim card and register it as a data-only plan. I recently set up one for the local shop after comms went down for weeks following local flooding. This way you can plug ethernet from atem and laptop into the router and live-stream via the sim card. Also, unlike with tethering your phone, you don't have apps in the background using your internet connection while you're trying to livestream. I plan on getting one of these routers for myself so I can roam around doing live-stream events for businesses.
Right on!
Your presentation is great and informitive for streaming using the phone for streaming. How about using the phone camera wirelessly as input into atem mini. I have searched for the subject but have not been able to find a solution except that I can pay around $500 for connecting phone to atem
Thanks for this, it's very helpful!

I have a question that I haven't been able to sort out: what do I do if the USB C port on the ATEM doesn't recognize my iPhone? Your popped right up in the ATEM software, but my ATEM doesn't recognize my phone. I'm using an iPhone SE, with a Belkin lightning-to-USB C cable. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

EDIT: I figured it out! You have to have your Personal Hotspot enabled for the ATEM to recognize that it's a streaming option.
Glad you found it!
Excellent! Thank you!
Love it.. this is a key feature! Does it work through a usb hub whilst also ISO recording? Asking for a friend.. 😁
@@photojosephthanks Jo.. trying to get my research accurate prior to purchase.. appreciate the note & love the channel!
Hmm. Good question. The USB protocol switches decoding what you plug in. You can use a hub for multiple drives, but not to go to a drive and to the computer. Since it’d be sending the compressed data to the phone, that’s probably the same protocol as connecting to a computer and not to a hard drive but I don’t actually know. You’ll have to test it!
Yup you deserve me subbing and a like
Hehe thank you!
Great video PhotoJoseph! I have a question that may fit within the context of your video.

BACKGROUND: We stream our worship services live. I currently use an ATEM Mini Extreme, connected to PC via USB. PC is hardwire connect to network switch. We use four blackmagic cameras, three are hardwired to ATEM and one is connected via Hollyland wireless transmitter. For Tally for the wireless cam, we just bought a CUEBI wireless tally - but I realized that in order to connect to ATEM, both the cuebi and the PC have to be connected to my router (which for streaming purposes, I do not want to connect PC to router). We do not stream directly from ATEM. We use Livestream Studio.

QUESTION: The cuebi connects via wifi. Here's the kicker - even with PC connected to network switch, cuebi cannot communicate with ATEM, even though atem is connected via ethernet to router, as well as cuebi connected via wifi to said router. May be a long shot question but here goes - Is there a work around in order to maintain my hardwire connection to my network switch, using THAT connection to live stream, but somehow to get the cuebi to connect to ATEM without use of a router?
@@photojoseph Do you offer phone consult/support? I need a little help here.
Why are you connecting the computer and the ATEM via USB? If they are both on the network, then a USB connection is not needed. The ATEM Software will find the ATEM on the network.
@@photojoseph Well, I do not want to stream from router - I'd need to hardwire directly into network switch. In order for cuebi to work, it'd need to connect to router via wifi. If I connect the ATEM to the router via ethernet, and also connect to computer via usb (said computer would also be connected to network switch), the atem does NOT read the router network IP address...it is picking up the network that the PC is connected to.
I don't totally follow. Why not have everything on the network; PC, ATEM, Livestream Studio and the CUEBI? Wouldn't that resolve the issue? You're referring to the hardware Livestream Studio right? So the stream happens from there; so what if everything else is on the network, too? I haven't used the CUEBI but it appears that it has to be on the the same network as the ATEM, just via WiFi, right? So again, just put everything on the network, no?
Hi Joseph, can I ask you if the atem switches to the secondary connection only if the first one is completely off? If the primary connection is slowed down not allowing a good streaming, does the switch happen on the secondary line anyway? Maybe you can set a threshold not to exceed via software? In any case for me, having two connections to the atem is enough to buy it. Thank you for your tips
@@photojoseph ok, thanks for the answer. I'll check the manual
That’s actually a really interesting question. I’ve only tested it with a complete disconnect; I don’t know if it’ll switch over if it simply has not enough throughput. You can download the user guide from Blackmagic website. Just go to the Support page and search for the ATEM. You can download the installer which includes the manual, even if you don’t yet have the hardware. As far as I know, it will only switch on a disconnect, and there definitely is no threshold setting. But I don’t know if it’ll switch if the bandwidth is simply too low.
Can't you just teather the laptop to cell phone and then usb connect the atem to the laptop rather then setting up a network?
No. The ATEM doesn’t get data over usb.
Your videos are terrific. I have subscribed. I have a live event coming up, super simple...one camera on the main speaker, one camera on a WS as a fall-back (OMG) shot and a PowerPoint presentation. My boss is most worried about the internet connection since we'll be in a building with not much AV support and questionable internet connectivity but we are in a city so we do have pretty good cell service. I'm planning to use an Teradek, VidiU Go with two nodes, connected to the CORE service feeding the various web streaming services. So, I'm covered on potential signal loss. I'll have a ATEM Mini Extreme. One HMDI out will feed by monitor for Multi-view. The other HDMI out will feed an Atomos Shogun to record a Pro-Res version of the live event. One USB-C will connect the ATEM to my Mac computer. So, question: how do I connect this set-up to the VidiU Go...via an Ethernet cable? Via the other USB-C output on the ATEM? Or should I use one of the HDMI out's to feed the VidiU Go and use the Other USB-C out on the ATEM to record the show on to a fast SSD? This is the one big thing that I find SO confusing about live streaming. Thanks.
@@photojoseph Duh...what an idiot I am. Yes, the HDMI out of the Shogun into the VidiU Go. That's perfect. Somnetimes we can't see the forest for the trees. Thanks for your clarity.
Sounds like you’re covering your bases! Yes the vidiu needs Ethernet unless it’s just being used for the cellular backup. But it also needs an HDMI feed for the program. Since you’re recording on a shogun, that has an hdmi out. Pass the signal through the shogun into the VidiU!
Is there a hub that works with the ATEM Mini? I would still like to record my stream to an external SSD, but in this configuration, it’s being used by the iPhone…
Hm interesting question. You CAN use a hub to connect multiple drives. You can NOT use a hub to connect a drive and a computer (different USB protocols and the port auto-switches). But I don’t know which protocols a tethered phone lives on! You should post a question on the Blackmagic forums, and report back here if you find out.
Can we use USB type c hub? Plug all such as iPhone as tethered device, usb disk to record channels and connect Atem Mini Pro ISO to computer for Atem S/W Control… it should logically solve this issue. Please suggest.
No. A hub can be used to add additional recording disks but that’s it. A hub can’t be used to make it a webcam and a recorder. Those are two different usb protocols. The USB port switches depending on what’s plugged in. It can be either/or but it can’t be both at the same time.
Awesome 😎
My atem mini pro is ON AIR switch blinking when I go for strem
@@photojoseph Thanks for reply sir. I identify problems it hardware problem lan port is not working
Insufficient bandwidth or incorrect internet setup
it0s interesting, but i guess using VPN (in my case) would be a problem for streaming,

but great explanation
If you have to use VPN then yes VPN + cellular is a pretty slow combination but the only way to know for sure is to test!
Just thinking while watching... For less config switching, something like a cheap TL-WR802N usb powered router could act as the bridge between the Atem and the laptop. Would be interesting to see if the router would survive the control bandwith needed.
Going wireless is a bad idea. For whatever reason the ATEM software easily drops a connection to the ATEM when on wifi, and it takes several seconds to reestablish the connection.
What happened Joe, not making any money in photography? You turned into electrician and cell phone sales person. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I don’t know who hurt you, but I hope you get the help you need.
@@photojoseph absolutely nothing funny about it. you have no clue when it comes to photography.
Hysterical 😆
I love your classes
I appreciate that!
When streaming using your mobile phone, do you encounter any problems with cache? I have read (and encountered myself) that many have problems with that.
You certainly can, as the mobile upload speed is likely quite a bit slower and less reliable than a high speed land connection. You really want a very good signal, and as fast a connection as possible of course. You should always measure your upload speed using an app like SpeedTest, and test from exactly where you’ll stream, then set an encoding bitrate well under that. I’d say half should be OK.
This is a great tip and so clearly explained, as always. I'm also not so terrified of IP addresses, subnet masks and gateways as I used to be. Many thanks.
Awesome!
Also easy way is to connect iPhone with Mac and share internet connection via LAN and then you have free USB C Port on ATEM to record video on SSD
That's… brilliant. I never thought of that!!
Fantastic. Great video Joseph. It was s so detailed. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to have a SIM Slot for the ATEM Mini, who knows. But for now this works great!. What I've been doing lately is using a 4G Router which has multiple Network ports to connect more than one device.

I'm planning on getting an ATEM Mini PRO or ISO. Still feeling a little bit hesitant on streaming form the ATEM instead of my computer. Been too attached to OBS Studio for a while.
when you use the 4g router do you plug the wired internet into the router's built in switch?
@@photojoseph I only use the ATEM Mini for the Switch. Everything else I'm doing from OBS. Titling, Animations, Lower thirds, Replay ( I also do sports) and extra tweaks. Personally ATEM somewhat feels daunting and I've been watching your videos to ramp up.

I really want to make a more professional live content and perhaps using ATEM might get me there. Also wrapping my head on how to still implement OBS if streaming from ATEM.

Btw, in your experience is there any benefit streaming from ATEM Mini vs. PC? Network efficiency, bitrate and reliability wise?
If you’re using OBS for titling or anything like that, then that’s totally understandable. However if you’re just using it for live streaming, then I highly recommend jumping to the hardware encoder of the ATEM!
When connecting directly to the switcher with ethernet from a Windows PC both the PC and the ATEM use APIPA adresses so no additional IP configuration is required
Really! What the heck is APIPA? “Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) is a feature in operating systems (such as Windows) that enables computers to automatically self-configure an IP address and subnet mask when their DHCP server isn't reachable.” — very interesting but it also seems like this was removed from macOS a decade ago? Maybe security reasons? Very interesting!
In order to live stream to Facebook out in the field you’ll need another hotspot for your laptop correct or is there a work around to not to have Facebook active on a desktop in order to hit the go live button
perhaps you could use castr or restream or one of those multi output solutions instead of being directly in Facebook, then have a secondary device for looking at comment feeds
Great point. You should be able to do that from the phone, right?
I'm not sure what use creating the "ATEM in the wild" location was. Your mac seemed to switch back to "Studio" when you plugged in the Belkin adapter so I think it was your Studio settings that you changed after that.
good catch, but of course while he's filming in the studio he's showing options for when you show up to someone else's event space and don't know how reliable their connections are.
Did it?? Oh snap, you’re right! LOL well that’s embarrassing. I wonder why it did that. I used to use this feature all the time between work and home when I worked a corporate job. No idea why it switched but the intent is still valid.
Great video, Joseph!

I also didn't realize that the ATEM had that capability at this point (how did I miss that?).

Also, fun fact, when you have two devices on the same Layer 2 network segment (i.e., where network traffic it not having to traverse a route processor / firewall) you technically don't actually need a gateway at all.

The only time you actually need to specify a gateway is when you need a route "out" of the network you are in. An example would be pulling up a website on your computer. Chances are that website isn't hosted from a system on your local network subnet, there gateway's job is to provide you that route out of that network so your request can eventually get out to the right place, hoping through routers on the internet until it reaches the right network.

So from a pure networking standpoint, you could leave the gateway on both devices - the ATEM and the computer - completely blank and you'd be able to talk.

All of that said, it would be interesting to see if the ATEM software would let you save without entering a gateway. It's possible that they make the gateway field required, which would be silly / lazy of them to do that when you don't need it configured to communicate with hosts on the same network subnet. Would be an interesting test to see!

:)
You are right, I was thinking the same thing. Also, technically with a mask of 255.255.0.0, only the first 2 “numbers” need to be the same. That is why they call it a mask.
